How Are The Safes Tested?

Fort Knox safes are subjected to an intense house fire simulation. The safe is monitored internally by nine thermocouple sensors that are placed evenly from top to bottom as per UL72 standards. The test is terminated once the first sensor reaches 350°F, we then document the duration and external temperature to get our fire rating.

Locked, sealed and ready to block the worst of flames

"...The house was totally destroyed and we lost almost everything. Luckily, a few years before the fire I purchased one of your [Fort Knox] gun safes...I was shocked when the safe was opened and there was no damage to any of our guns or valuables."

Type-C Fireboard

Type C Fireboard: is a proprietary gypsum-based board that contains additional reinforcing fibers and special additives. These allow it to withstand higher temperatures for longer periods compared to standard Type X, making it ideal for high fire-rated safes. The additives help the board retain structural integrity and resist shrinkage or crumbling during intense heat, which helps keep the safe’s internal temperature low during a fire.

Thermal Barrier

Thermal Barrier: A dead air gap between the safe’s outer wall and the Type-C fireboard, created by welded anchors. This gap significantly slows down the external transfer of heat into the safe during a fire, improving the safe’s overall fire resistance.

Dual Activated Thermal Door Seal

Smoke & Fire Seal: Two seals around the perimeter of the safe door. The Smoke Seal reduces smoke, heat, and caustic residue from entering. The Fire Seal blocks flames by activating Palusol, a material that expands at 212°F, sealing the gap against fire.

Security Plate

Security Plate: The security plate is a solid sheet of steel that spans edge to edge inside the safe door. This full coverage design ensures the door holds its shape under extreme heat, preventing warping that could break the fire seal and let flames in. It creates a resilient barrier that helps keep fire and heat out, protecting your valuables.

Solid Construction

Solid Construction: Solid construction, also called unibody construction, means the safe’s body is mostly built from a single sheet of steel formed and welded into shape. This edge-to-edge steel design eliminates weak points found in multi-panel builds, creating a stronger, more rigid structure that resists attacks and holds up better in a fire.
